Arlington, VA – April 29, 2010 - Better Business Bureau helped more than 15,000 individuals and small business owners fight identity theft by shredding a record-breaking 480 tons of sensitive paper documents for free at “Secure Your ID” Day community events across North America on April 17.

“The success and popularity of ‘Secure Your ID’ Day grows every year and BBB is proud to provide this service to communities across North America,” said Stephen A. Cox, President and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “BBB is here for consumers not only when they need help finding a trustworthy business or when they have a grievance with a company, but also to help them guard their finances and protect their families in small ways, every day.”

For the last two years, BBB has provided free document shredding and ID theft prevention tips twice a year as part of “Secure Your ID” Day. For the recent “Secure Your ID” Day, BBB shredded more than 480 tons of paper documents—a nearly 30 percent increase over the Spring 2009 event—at 50 locations across the US and Canada.

The Fall 2010 “Secure Your ID” Day will be held October 23. For more information on BBB “Secure Your ID” Day and identity theft prevention measures for both consumers and businesses, visit: www.bbb.org/us/secureid
